Saint James Hotel

Saint James Hotel – Red Wing

This Italianate red brick hotel was designed in 1874 by Edward P. Bassford and served Red Wing’s commercial district along Main Street. A century later the 61-room hotel was renovated to its original splendor by its current owner, the Red Wing Shoe Company. Hotel rooms, which are named after riverboats, are all unique in design and décor and feature antique and reproduction furniture. The hotel’s restoration is credited with playing a significant role in the city’s historic downtown revival that began in the 1970s. Red Wing was named a Preserve America community in 2005 and last year (2008) was designated one of a Dozen Distinctive Destinations in the U.S. by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
