Pipestone Commercial Historic District – Pipestone
The seventeen buildings of the Pipestone Commercial Historic District make this the largest concentration of Sioux red quartzite buildings in the state. The majority of the buildings, built in the 1890s, relate to each other in height and scale while reflecting Richardsonian Romanesque, Neoclassical, and Italianate styles. Several building facades incorporate rich detailing and embellishments carved by local craftsmen using contrasting quartzite-color stone. During the late 1970s, buildings were rehabilitated by public and private efforts, led by the restoration of the Calumet Hotel. Other notable projects included the Carnegie Library (now the senior citizens center) and the Mackay and Syndicate commercial blocks.
