The Hotel Kaddatz, a Renaissance Revival-style buildingl designed by George Hancock and constructed in 1915 for local merchant Charles Kaddatz, has a colorful history. In 1927, Gus Comstock made headlines by establishing a world record for coffee-drinking in the hotel’s restaurant: 85 cups in three hours and ten minutes. The hotel closed in 1975 and stood vacant for many years until it was renovated in 2004 by Artspace. The $2.4 million project created 6,000 square feet of commercial space on the ground floor, a lower level art gallery, and ten housing units on the building’s upper two floors. Its grand staircase, sealed off by an earlier remodeling, was restored and extended to the lower level as well. The project’s renovation architects were BKV Group, Minneapolis.
