Graystone Hotel – Detroit Lakes

Downtown hotels were an early community hallmark that helped establish Detroit Lakes as a resort destination. The Graystone Hotel, constructed in 1916, was the grandest of all. Designed by Duluth architect Edward F. Broomhall, its fireproof claim and luxurious amenities made it a favorite with well-heeled travelers who would enjoy the area’s outdoor activities and relax in the comfort of first-class accommodations. For several generations, the hotel was owned by the family of its builder, Elon Galusha Holmes, but changing travel tastes in the 1950s took their toll and in 1970s the building was converted into apartments. In 1998, the Midwest Minnesota Community Development Corporation purchased the building and converted it into affordable housing units while restoring much of its original public spaces and its exterior elegance.
