May is Preservation Month!
What is Preservation Month?
Established in 1973 by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Preservation Month is supported and co-sponsored by local preservation groups and state historical societies across the country. Many events are scheduled with the goal of instilling community pride, promoting heritage tourism and showing the economic and social benefits of historic preservation.
What’s happening in Minnesota
Minnesota especially loves preservation! The Preservation Alliance of Minnesota, one of the only state-wide preservation organizations in the region, is co-sponsoring Preservation Month in May in partnership with local businesses, organizations and new preservation development projects. Our Preservation Month activities are held to bring awareness of the important historic resources that give meaning and a sense of place to our State. Find out how we’re partnering with The Red Stag Supper Club to create preservation-themed menus during the month of May! And stay tuned to hear more about our Preservation Month Celebration with sneak-peek tours of the renovation at the Pioneer Endicott buildings in Downtown St. Paul, featuring sustenance provided by local businesses!
What can I do?
Preservation Month acknowledges a shared mission throughout the state to cultivate an appreciation and an awareness of historic places. We encourage you to get out and celebrate your community’s history and heritage in your own way: organize a clean-up day at a local house, museum or along a historic Main Street, support Local Preservation Programs, visit a historic site across the state, encourage your neighbors to become involved in preservation, or nominate a recent project for a MN Preservation Award. The official hashtag for National Preservation Month is #presmonth, share the power of Minnesota preservationists on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
Get involved with preservation in a new way! Support a local establishments like The Red Stag Supper Club (which just happens to be the first LEED-CI registered restaurant project in Minnesota!), join our pub crawl in Red Wing, MN and have some fun with preservation. Learn how the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota is celebrating and saving historic places year-round by exploring our website!
We want to hear your stories and preservation successes. Contact Ramona Haines, Development Coordinator at firstname.lastname@example.org with questions or to share with us how you celebrate preservation in the month of May!
