Mortar Matters: Masonry Workshops March 26 or 27

Mortar Matters: A Joint Masonry Workshop
Friday, March 26, 2010, in Ames, & Saturday, March 27, 2010, in Mount Vernon

Two workshops. Two dates. Choose the workshop that fits your schedule. The same all-day workshop will be presented at each location. Seminars and walking tours at each workshop will be conducted by John Speweik, of Speweik Preservation Consultants, Inc., Elgin, IL, and David Arbogast, of Arbogast Paint Analysis, Davenport, IA.

Attendees will participate in seminars on topics such as mortar and vocabulary; hands-on identification of mortar and application of mortar; moisture in masonry; and finding the right contractor.

Save the date and plan to join us in March. Information on registration and seminar schedules will be available early in 2010.

Hosted by the Ames Historic Preservation Commission & the Mount Vernon Historic Preservation Commission, in partnership with the State Historical Society of Iowa, and supported with funds from the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior

Breakfast with a Preservationist – February 17

The next Breakfast with a Preservationist will be Wednesday, February
17, 2010, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m
., ADM Conference Room, Mill City
Museum, 710 South Second Street.

Write a Valentine for Your Favorite Building – Breakfast with a Preservationist is inviting you to send us your choice of a historic (or old enough) place in Minneapolis you enjoy visiting. That building or landscape may be where you work, live, learn, worship, dine, or just hang around.

We will display your favorite historic place on February 17 and ask you to describe in a few words why this place means something to you – why you visit there often, occasionally, or even once in a great while.

Email your choice, along with a digital image, by Friday, February 12, to admin@preserveminneapolis.org. Join us to see your fave, along with others, and learn a bit why preservation has a functional value of personal connection.

Metered parking is available on the street and in the public parking garage across from the museum. Coffee and pastries will be available – donations are appreciated. This event is free!
